The war dragged on, Operation Barbarossa stalled in the East. Nazis needed a new and even more drastic approach to rid the occupied land of the native people whose Resistance grew and became a dangerous thorn in their behind. Germans were not the first nor the last to realize that to stop Resistance from re-growing new hands who fought them was to cut them off in the womb. A new and grizzly stage in the warfare thus began: killing and kidnapping children.
It was a multi-faceted war:
- As more and more German men were being killed in the Eastern Front it became imperative to restore the shrinking numbers of cannon-fodder. A special operation began: prowling occupied Poland in search of racially acceptable children, mass-kidnapping infants, children and youth. Trainloads were carted back to the Reich were the children were given for adoption (the youngest) or indoctrination and resocialization (the older) before their integration into German society.
- Then there were the other children, those who did not pass the purity criteria. If they weren't killed on the spot or did not die of malnutrition they were locked up (with or without their mothers) in concentration camps.
- Children are the future. By killing and stealing Polish children Germans were killing biological existence of the Polish people...

As early as September 1939 Polish Armed Forced (Home Army, Peasants Battalions, People's Army, and more) and Civilian Administration (Directorate of Civil Resistance) in German-occupied territories began to form their underground structures. Starting as ad-hoc scattered groups operating in secrecy practiced over past centuries these would in time consolidate and form the largest Underground State and Armed Forces in Europe [we will talk about this in more detail in upcoming posts]. Among the numerous organs of a functioning underground state were civilian courts, military courts and their long arms of punishing law. Throughout history there existed traitors who collaborated with the enemy, they exist today and will exist in the future. While Poland was the only occupied country that did not collaborate with Germans (Vichy, Quisling and their iterations across Europe) there were individual flunkeys among the population who served or worked with the mortal enemy. Underground civilian prosecutors and military intelligence actively tracked them down. They were investigated, sentenced and punished according to the laws of the time of war. Special units of executioners carried out sentences that were publicised in underground press as warning, sending shockwaves across the country, providing proof that the Polish underground authorities exist and are working.
From the Underground Criminal Code:
"Whoever commits the crime of treason, espionage, provocation, denunciation or inhuman persecution and harm to the Polish population - shall be subject to the death penalty."
Let there be no mistake. A Nation has a long memory. And equally long arms that will reach its traitors anywhere.

Once it became evident that Germans intended to commit total biological destruction of the Polish people, the Underground leadership of the Civil War Directorate released a code of conduct for the Nation. It started with the 10 Commandments of Civil War, released across the country through underground presses and networks:
10 Commandments of Civil War
1) Poland is fighting the enemy not only outside the country's borders, but also in its currently occupied territories.
2) Until the commencement of armed conflict, the expression of war on Polish soil is civil war.
3) Participation in the civil war is the duty of every Polish citizen.
4) The basic obligation and duty is to respect the legitimate Polish authorities in exile and to obey the orders of the Authoritative Factors in the Country.
5) The order of civil war against the occupier is to boycott his orders and appeals, to hinder his every action - within the limits set by the Direction of Polish Life, and to absolutely boycott trade, cultural and social relations.
6) There is a need for solidarity in society, supporting our fellow Poles wherever they are threatened with destruction or poverty.
7) The sense of national honor must be maintained at the highest level and acted upon in accordance with this honor.
8) In cases where a Pole deviates from the rules of conduct that apply to him, it is necessary to counteract them by means of persuasion, admonitions, social boycott, and finally by recording the offending facts and forwarding them to the appropriate Polish authorities.
9) A boycott is in force against apostates and renegades, as against an enemy, and they are registered as traitors.
10) The duty of every Pole is to care for the preservation and preservation of Polishness in all its forms, i.e. human, cultural and material, as the forces necessary to fight for freedom and rebuild the Homeland.
Poles! The degree of our adherence to the above principles and commandments will be a test of our civic worth for future generations. Remember that in the days of freedom, we will all have to give an account of our current position and our actions.
The 10 Commandments were further expanded throughout the occupation, as needed, to include practical case scenarios, intended for particular groups, such as, but not limited to (the list is truly too long to publish here).
The Civil War Directorate issued directives for every social stratum and profession — such as farmers, workers, industrialists, civil servants, clergy, doctors, lawyers, railway workers, women, youth, etc,. A fundamental mandate, recurring in every set of instructions, required resistance to the occupier at all times and in all places, maintaining an unyielding attitude toward them, and sabotaging any regulations or laws that harmed Polish society or benefited the occupier. It also strictly forbade signing the loyalty list (Volksliste) or maintaining relations with Germans, while mandating obedience to the underground authorities. An example of a requirement imposed on professional groups was the obligation for doctors to issue medical certificates to individuals facing deportation for forced labor in Germany...
Failure to comply with these obligations carried penalties ranging from flogging and banishment to the death penalty...
